If you have had your natal chart done or follow my Tumblr blog for the daily astrological forecast, then you might be confused by some of the terminology. What does it mean when a sign is fixed? What does it mean when a planet is trining another? What is a conjunction of planets and why is this troublesome? Norah Guide is going to take the confusion and chaos out of that today by going through some of the basics of astrology terms with you today.

Like most studies, astrology is divided into groups, many of them. When we are dealing with the planets and the zodiac signs, you have a lot of information to work with, because this information changes every single day the Earth is moving! Some people take entire degrees in this subject, so be aware that what you will learn today is merely a tip of the tip of the iceberg.

The first thing that many people already know is the elements of the zodiac. These are grouped into the four elements: Fire, Earth, Air, and Water. The characteristics associated with these elements are the heat that comes with fire, the stable nature of the Earth, the changeability of air, and the fluid nature of water. So for example, a person with fire signs in their chart are going to be on the hot and passionate side of life. Water signs or houses in the water signs will be emotional and intuitive because they are fluid in nature and difficult to understand sometimes. Air signs and planets in the airy houses will be very cerebral, and communicative. The Earth signs will be…down to earth. Fire signs are Leo, Aries, Sagittarius. Water signs are Scorpio, Cancer, and Pisces. Earth signs are Taurus, Virgo, and Capricorn. Air signs are Gemini, Aquarius, and Libra.

Then we break this down into three qualities. Each of the elements in the zodiac has three signs in it. Fire signs for example are Leo, Aries, and Sagittarius. These three signs then are broken down by qualities. One is cardinal, one is fixed, and the other is mutable. A fixed sign is one that does not change. Leo, Taurus, Scorpio, and Aquarius are fixed signs, one of each element. You get what you get with these folks and they aren’t all that unpredictable. Cardinal signs on the other hand are leadership types. Here you have Capricorn, Libra, Cancer, and Aries, one each of the four elements. Mutable signs, now they are the unpredictable ones. You may have an idea, but you never know what you are going to get with them. These are Gemini, Virgo, Pisces, and Sagittarius. They change their mind a lot, adapt with their surroundings, and are the most flexible bunch. At the same time, if you have a lot of mutable signs showing up in your solar return chart, you are in for a year of many changes.

And then we have the aspects of a chart. These are the important parts of a chart because they will describe relationships. Every natal chart is mapped out in 360 degrees, and aspects happen when planets are 0 degrees apart, 30 degrees apart, 60 degrees apart, and so on. A soft aspect is also called a sextile and a trine. These bring with them positive changes and beneficial elements to a life. A hard aspect is known as a conjunction, opposition, or square, and what you will see with this are intense changes, a lot of drama, and definitely some challenges.

When you read a daily astrological forecast, and see a square or conjunction, this tells you some intensity is on the way today. The same with a trine, but this is a soft aspect, so you will notice positive benefits happening in the day as a result of soft aspects occurring within the planets.
