When it comes to the field of astrology, there is so much to know about it. If you have received your birth or natal chart, or read an extensive astrological report on your birth chart, or read details of others, in all likelihood you have seen or heard some terms that confuse you. Sometimes we just gloss over these terms not thinking too much of them, until it dawns on us that perhaps knowing these terms would give us more clarity on our charts and in our lives. It would. But it is more helpful information rather than necessary information. Today Norah Guide is going to help you get some clarity on some of this information, by discussing one of those terms, the Ascendant Sign.

Perhaps an astrologer has told you, “Well, your Sun sign is this and your Moon sign is this but your Ascendant sign is this, so what this really means is….” Sound familiar? Many people, by that I mean astrologers, consider the Ascendant sign the most important one on your chart. This is the Rising sign, the sign where the Sun was rising at the precise moment you were born. It is often abbreviated with ASC or AS on the chart, and is the reason knowing your time and location of birth is important for your chart.

Some believe that the closer the AS falls to the beginning of the sign, the stronger will its effects be. Likewise if the AS falls towards the end, its effects will be weakened. Because the AS is specific to your birth location and time, thus the effects of the AS will be environmental. In other words, the AS represents those aspects in your environment and conditioning that will have a great effect on your life. It is also often said to be your “mask” so to speak. I often say the Sun sign is your outer personality, your Moon sign is all of your secrets and all that is hidden in your subconscious, and your Ascendant is the sign that is how the world or your environment perceives you, your mask.

Sometimes we hear of someone describing us a certain way and we are perplexed. How can they think this of me? Likely, they are seeing your AS peeking out, when you know your true self as your Moon sign or your Sun sign. The AS is what your appearance looks like even, and your social personality. Your public face so to speak. The rising signs fall into the same categories as the others, fire, water, earth, and air, they are the same sings on the zodiac as your Sun and Moon signs and thus carry all of those qualities. It is not uncommon for example for someone to have a Sun sign of Scorpio, a Moon sign of Capricorn, and a Rising sign of Leo.
